Peter Bohlin FAIA at Kent State Lecture Series
Kent State University hosted a presentation by Peter Bohlin FAIA on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. This program, sponsored jointly by AIA Akron, the Akron-Canton CSI, AIA Eastern Ohio and AIA Ohio. The program is titles “The Nature of Circumstance” and is based on Mr. Bohlin’s belief and interest in shaping of architecture to the particular circumstance of each project and the connection between this and the many other aspects of architecture.
Peter Bohlin FAIA is a seasoned architect who started his firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson 42 years ago that has since grown to a practice of 150 people in six cities. In his 55 year career, his designs have garnered close to 500 awards, with his most recent being the 2010 AIA Gold Medalist. The Gold Medal is the highest individual award given by the AIA and the profession’s highest individual honer given in recognition of an acumulation of work that makes a significant and lasting impact on architecture.

Architects at the Statehouse
Governor Kasich Attends AIA Ohio Day at the Statehouse
Over 120 architects attended the AIA Ohio Legislative Day held today at the Athletic Club of Columbus and at the Ohio statehouse. A continuing education program titled “Doing Good to do well….Advocacy as a Business Strategy”, was offered with presentations by Michael Schuster FAIA, Stephen L. Sharp AIA, Daniel Barringer AIA, and Robert Keller AIA. Jud A. Kline FAIA moderated the program. AIA Ohio Executive Vice President David Field CAE, Hon. AIA provided an update on legislative issues and the key concerns of the AIA and the AIA Ohio membership.
The members attended a luncheon at the statehouse followed by an appearance by Governor John Kasich. The governor presented his vision of Ohio to the membership and then presented the Good Government Award to Senator Chris Widener FAIA, Chair of the Senate Finance Committee. The program continued through the afternoon with many of the members meeting with their legislators or legislative aides. AIA Architect, in the June 10, 2011 edition, also included a video link in its “From the AIA” section, of Governor Kasich’s address to the AIA Ohio membership. 2011 Legislative Day
Senator Widener, FAIA to be Recognized
AIA Ohio will hold the 2011 Legislative Day tomorrow, June 8th. This years program will include opportunities for members to earn continuing education credit, become better informed on legislative issues and to meet with and discuss current issues with legislators from throughout the state. The program is scheduled to begin at the Athletic Club of Columbus at 10:00 am and will include a continuing education program addressing advocacy and business strategies. At noon, AIA Ohio members and members of the legislature will attend a luncheon/ reception at the statehouse atrium where Senator Christopher Widener, FAIA will be presented with the AIA Ohio “Good Government Award”. Senator Widener currently chairs the Senate Finance Committee and is a past president of AIA Ohio.

Deb Kunce FAIA elected AIA Second Vice President
Members Elected, Others Recognized at National Convention
Deb Kunce FAIA, senior AIA Ohio Valley Regional Director was elected Friday, May 13th, 2011 as one of the two, Second Vice Presidents to the AIA National Board of Directors. Deb was selected from a field of four members seeking the position. AIA Ohio congratulates Deb on her successful run for the Vice President position. The elections were a result of many months of hard work by all candidates that began at this years Grassroots in February with voting taking place on Thursday and Friday during the convention. Again, our congratulations to Deb on her successful campaign. Also on Friday, AIA Cleveland member Wayne Mortensen Assoc. AIA was elected by the NAC members as Chair of the National Associates Committee. AIA Ohio Congratulates Wayne on this significant achievement.
In addition to the elections, a number of members were recognized at the AIA National Convention in New Orleans. As announced earlier this year, two members were elevated to Fellowship. They were Deb Kunce FAIA, AIA Indianapolis and Jud Kline FAIA, AIA Cleveland. Also recognized was Jack Baumann, AIA from AIA Akron who was one of eleven honored with the Young Architects Award. Recipients were chosen for their significant contributions to the profession at an early stage of their career. AIA Ohio Valley member Sanford Garner AIA, from Indianapolis was also recognized as a Young Architect Award recipient. During the convention, AIA Ohio’s Director of Services Kate Brunswick, CAE, Hon AIA, was officially recognized as an Honorary Member of the Institute. Kate was nominated last year with her selection announced during Grassroots in February. For over eleven years, Kate has served AIA Ohio and the Ohio Valley with the highest level of distinction. We congratulate and thank Kate for service to AIA Ohio and the profession.

Firm Profile Submissions
Preparations are underway for the 2011 edition of the AIA Ohio Handbook. The handbook will be mailed to the complete AIA Ohio membership, several affiliate organizations, and all 132 members of the Ohio General Assembly upon publication in July, 2011.
Each AIA Ohio member is listed in the book alphabetically, by chapter, with his/her name, address, phone, fax and email address. Another very important part of out directory is the “Firm Profile” which provides significant information about AIA Ohio architectural firms. The cost to list your firm is a nominal $50 processing fee. We’ve updated our processes this year so that firm profiles can be submitted online. AIA Ohio Member Honored with Young Architects Award
AIA Ohio’s own Jack Baumann, AIA, has received the prestigious Young Architects Award by AIA National. The Young Architects Award is given to individuals who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of their architectural career. Jack is the immediate past Associate Director for the Ohio Valley Region, a past Associate Director to the AIA Ohio Board, as well as the current president of AIA Akron. The dedication of Jack Baumann, AIA, to the architecture profession is prevalent in many of the positions he has held through the AIA and within his community. He has always focused on the advancement of emerging professionals and mentorship of others. Through his involvement, Jack always looks toward the future from the impact he makes today. He promotes architecture as more than just creating physical buildings, but creating relationships with his colleagues, his clients, and his peers. Click here to read more.

Ohio Valley Region Members Honored
Institute Honors New Fellows and Honorary Member
AIA Ohio and the Ohio Valley Region learned over the past several weeks of honors extended to several of our members. These recognitions were officially announced Friday with the release of AIA Architect. The members receiving recognition include two members who were elected to the AIA College of Fellows. This year’s class of 104 members elevated to the College include Jud Kline FAIA of AIA Cleveland and Deb Kunce FAIA of AIA Indianapolis. You can access the information on this years class of Fellows at 2011 College of Fellows. Congratulations to Jud and Deb for your well deserved recognition in service to the profession and the AIA. Deb is currently running for one of the Vice President positions at AIA for 2012. New fellows will be officially recognized at the AIA Convention in New Orleans.
Also recognized with one of the AIA’s highest honors for non-architects was Kate Brunswick, CAE, Hon AIA who last month was notified of her selection by the AIA Honorary Membership Jury as an Honorary Member of the Institute. Everyone at AIA Ohio congratulates Kate on this achievement and we thank her for both the energy and passion in which she has served our membership.

Deb Kunce FAIA runs for Vice President Position
Ohio Valley Regional Director Pursues National Position
Regional Director Deb Kunce, FAIA announced earlier this year her candidacy for one of the Vice President Positions at the AIA for 2012. Deb is currently serving the AIA Ohio Valley region as one of our two regional directors on the National Board. Deb has worked hard to advance the interests of our members and the goals of the profession, and in the short time she has served as a member of the AIA Board of Directors, she has made significant and lasting contributions. We ask that all members of the region support and offer your assistance to Deb in her election efforts.
