Clinton to Address AIA at National Convention in Atlanta

Join the AIA on May 14 for a keynote address by President Bill Clinton, Founder of the Clinton Foundation, and 42nd President of the United States at the AIA National Convention.

William Jefferson Clinton was the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice – first in 1992 and then in 1996. After leaving the White House, President Clinton established the Clinton Foundation with the mission to improve global health, strengthen economies, promote health and wellness, and protect the environment.  In addition to his Foundation work, President Clinton has served as the top United Nations envoy for the Indian Ocean tsunami recovery effort and as the UN Special Envoy to Haiti. Today, the Clinton Foundation is supporting economic growth, capacity building, and education in Haiti.

Is Advocacy part of your New Year’s resolutions?

It’s that time of year again to make New Year’s resolutions.  While many of us will focus on ways to improve our health and well being, it is also a good time for us to focus on our profession.  With the start of the new year, we also begin a new election cycle that should prove to be both interesting and contentious as members of both the Ohio Assembly and Congress position themselves for re-election over the next two years.  Coupled with the ever changing dynamics within various agencies and boards, it can be said that advocacy is never boring.

Whether your concern is preservation or project delivery methods, advocacy plays a roll.  The AIA, through state and national efforts, addresses issues that play an important role in our industry.  As the AIA implements it’s “Year of the Advocate”, we ask members to consider contributing to the AIA Ohio PAC and ArchiPAC so that we might continue our efforts to create connections and establish relationships with our senators and representatives.  To make a contribution, please click on the contribute button above, or visit the AIA Ohio weblink.  To contribute the the national ArchiPAC, visit our webpage at www.archipac.org.

Goodyear, Cincinnati Music Hall among $41.8 in Historic Preservation Tax Credits

The Kasich administration will issue $41.8 million in Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits to rehabilitate 35 historic buildings around the state. Projects will spur private investments totaling approximately $600 million in 12 communities, according to the Ohio Development Services Agency (DSA).

Round 13 awards will help private developers rehabilitate historic buildings in downtowns and neighborhoods, many of which are currently vacant and act as a drain on local communities, DSA said.

“These projects transform vacant and underutilized properties into viable places for business and living,” DSA Director David Goodman said in a release. “This program has been a valuable tool for community revitalization.”

Commercial and residential projects include office, hotel, retail and event spaces and 792 new market-rate housing units.

AIA National Board Implements Governance Changes

The AIA National Board of Directors met in Washington DC, December 10th and 11th as the transition to the new governance model took place.  With the Board completing the approval of a variety of actions, including the selection of the Gold Medal and Firm Award recipients, the inaugural assembly of the AIA Strategic Council was held on December 12th as they took on issues of internal governance and a review of strategic issues.  The governance change was approved in Chicago by membership with a change to the bylaws that was advanced by the Board of Directors.  This change was crafted to create a smaller, more nimble board while at the same time creating a more outward looking strategic council that is charged with advancing the profession and the AIA by looking at more long range efforts to better position the AIA within the design and construction industry.

AIA Ohio’s “Good Samaritan” Bill Gets Hearing

AIA Ohio’s “Good Samaritan” Bill Gets Hearing

The Senate Civil Justice Committee took testimony November 19 regarding AIA Ohio’s proposed “Good Samaritan Bill” (HB379).

Rep. Blessing offered sponsor testimony for the bill, which he said would grant civil immunity to architects, engineers and surveyors volunteering during a declared emergency under the purview of a body authorized to act in an official capacity. He said currently, these people could be sued while volunteering during a declared emergency.

He said the bill would “encourage more volunteer work by removing barriers that discourage such work.”
