New Poll added on Associates Programs
2010-10-04
A new poll has been added to the website in an attempt to determine how members would like to see AIA Ohio address programs for Associate members. Some arguments have been made that regular assigned member and Associate member programs should be planned to accommodate the needs of both groups. Others suggest that separate programs, planned and coordinated by Associates should be provided to permit Associates and Emerging Professionals to provide programs distinct to their needs and goals. What do you think. Please add your vote on the new poll added to the lower left corner of this page and help us better develop programs necessary to meet member needs.
Institute Secretary Extends 2009 CE Reporting
2010-10-03
The AIA Secretary has extended the deadline for members to report their 2009 education requirements. In an email to CACE members and Component Presidents, Institute President George H. Miller FAIA and Paul W. Welch, Hon AIA, Acting Executive Director, announced that members who are behind in updating their transcript records have been granted and extension until Friday, December 31, 2010. In recognizing the issues architects have faced because of the economic slowdown, the change was determined necessary to help members to complete and report their required CE requirements. This extension is not a waiver to the CE requirements. Those persons seeking a waiver should contact the Institute Secretary.
Members who are at risk of losing membership by not meeting their continuing education requirements should have received an email directly from the Institute notifying them of this extension.
Those currently not in compliance and also interested in petitioning the institute for a CE waiver should Click Here for additional information.

AIA Ohio Board takes action at July Meeting
The AIA Ohio Board of Directors took action on a number of issues at the July meeting help at AIA Columbus and the Columbus Center for Architecture. The mid-summer meeting is usually a busy meeting, but efforts to move both new and existing projects forward made for a lengthy day.
The Board of Directors reviewed agenda items, including current finances, the Presidents and President-elects reports as well as the legislative report from David Field, CAE Hon. AIA. A presentation on the Strategic Alignment Task Force was made by Terry Welker AIA. Welker has worked over the past several months to compile information gathered by task force members and to provide a summary of comments and suggestions. The board voted to accept the report and will move forward at the next meeting in addressing specific issues identified in the report.
Architects Earn Continuing Education at AIA Ohio Spring Meeting
Over 115 architects and associate architects fought the bad weather to come to the Columbus Renaissance Hotel on Friday, May 21 for the AIA Ohio Spring Meeting, Helping Architects and Firms Survive in Lean Times. The programs were kicked off by Ray Kogan, who discussed current trends and offered ways for firms and architects to manage their way out of the recession. Kogan was followed by a legislative update by AIA Ohio EVP/CEO, David Field, CAE, Hon. AIA. After a quick lunch, the group broke out into different sessions, covering Marketing and Finding Projects, Staying Relevant in Today’s Economy, Successful Project Interviews, and Successful Resumes and Job Interviews. AIA Ohio Past President Doug Steidl, FAIA, gave the keynote summary focusing on the Future of the Profession. This free event built on the first AIA Ohio Spring meeting, held last year, and was offered to all Ohio architects. Many thanks to Steve Shinn, AIA, for putting together such a strong program. Handouts and presentations can be found by clicking here.
AIA Ohio Task Force Projects
AIA Ohio continues its efforts to collect information and to provide for informed planning sessions as we move forward through the rest of the year and into 2011. The organization has been concentrating on the Strategic Alignment Task Force, created last year, that has been charged with collecting information and offering comments and opinions on a wide range of issues facing AIA Ohio. This task force, set to conclude its work on May 7, will provide the board with suggestions on ways to address issues relating to dues, management, representation, conventions, and the overall mission of the organization. Members of this committee, appointed by their chapters, are asked to address as many of the questions in each of of the eight categories as possible prior to May 7, 2010, to allow a summary to be prepared by committee chair Terry Welker, AIA for the May 21, 2010 board meeting.
Survey of Ohio Design/Construction Industry’s Level of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Adoption
The State Architect’s Office (SAO) is beginning a process to develop protocols for the specification of building information modeling (BIM) for design/construction projects of public facilities. To supplement their current fact finding stage, they have developed a short survey to assess the current level of BIM adoption within Ohio’s design and construction industry. SAO is seeking your input. They are requesting the completion of the survey by April 30, 2010.
Click the link below to complete the electronic survey which will take approximately 8-10 minutes.
Regional Convention Survey
As part of an ongoing review of programs and offerings, AIA Ohio, along with AIA Indiana and AIA Kentucky, is reviewing plans for increasing the frequency of regional conventions. As part of this effort, a poll has been running on the front page of this site to see what members want. Our current tally shows that nearly 75% of our membership would like to see regional conference occur at least every other year, and nearly 15% of those responding would like to see a regional convention every year. With the approval of the AIA Kentucky board last week, the 2011 conference in Dayton will be our next regional convention. The Ohio and Indiana boards approved the conference last month.
We would like to provide a conference that meets the needs of a majority of our members. Cast your vote to help us plan for this important educational opportunity.
