Job Overview

Campus planning provides long-term direction and goals for the university’s physical and built environment. Ensuring the highest and best use of land and space to meet the university’s academic, research, and strategic initiatives. This includes architectural planning services for relocations, reorganizations, renovations, and capital construction projects. Campus planning covers all aspects of the built environment and the network of systems that link these elements in support of the campus community, including buildings, open space, transportation, and accessibility.

Essential Functions

  • Undertake advanced professional work related to various planning assignments, including space and site planning, development of functional and programmatic requirements for projects, feasibility studies, and developing project solutions and alternatives.
  • Evaluate projects for alignment with university’s strategic mission and priorities.
  • Conduct comprehensive research on project needs, industry trends, and relevant planning benchmarks.
  • Compile relevant data, organize, and evaluate to support project recommendations and determine planning priorities.
  • Facilitate client engagement meetings, workshops, and informational presentations within the campus community.
  • Develop programming documents, space needs, project narratives, estimates, and schedules.
  • Monitor projects in development for compliance with programmatic requirements and planning principles.
  • Prepare capital budgets, technical reports, planning studies, and related documents.
  • Communicate reports and findings in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Serve as a liaison between consultants, clients, campus stakeholders, and campus leadership.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders, university departments, external stakeholders, and personnel. Coordinate internal approvals from pertinent parties, as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with staff from other units such as project management, construction management, engineering, interior design, space management, and real estate.
  • Develop planning processes, standards, guidelines, and deliverables.
  • Conduct quality control assessments and post-occupancy evaluations.
  • Mentor junior planners, offering guidance and sharing expertise.
  • Serve as a career planner.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Urban Planning or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides leadership, development and an effective system of accountability to the Site and Facility Development team. Manages in accordance with delegated authority, and Great Parks’ policies, applicable laws, and regulations.

Establishes priorities, performance requirements, and professional development targets that are connected to the agency’s goals, objectives and initiatives. Develops project design goals and creative vision for confirmation with senior leadership.

Establishes community engagement goals and methods for capital improvement projects. Tracks goals and maintains feedback loop on progress.

Ensures aesthetic and experiential qualities of works are consistent with Great Parks’ identity, brand, and placemaking strategies.

Ensures works are consistent with sustainability, accessibility, and other organizational goals and policies.

Develops and oversees the site and facility development grant strategy, in coordination with the Grants Manager.

Manages relationships with external partners. Ensures coordination with other leaders for high-level advocacy.

Maintains responsibility for management and coordination of contractors and consultants to ensure the highest quality of capital improvements, appropriate legal bidding process, and appropriate expenditure of funds. Oversees selection of consultants to ensure selection of most qualified team per project objectives and in accordance with Great Parks’ master plan, strategic plan, policies, and requirements.

Recommends expenditures on capital projects based upon approved budget. Develops budget requests based upon project cost estimates. Approves purchasing requests. 

Develops and implements departmental expenditure budgets and maintains responsibility for monitoring and controlling expenditures within approved budget.  

Advocates with regional partners and jurisdictions to build and leverage strategic partnerships and pursue funding and other opportunities.

Drives equitable access through department procedures and planning and design decisions.

Makes formal presentations and speaks before groups concerning park planning and development.

May lead select high-priority projects as needed, but typically focuses on portfolio oversight, strategic alignment, and division-wide leadership.

Performs job duties in accordance with Great Parks’ policies, procedures, and performance expectations.

Maintains confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information.  

Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedule as required.

QUALIFICATIONS 

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Landscape Architecture or related field is required.

A minimum of five years of progressive design and/or project delivery experience is required.

A minimum of five years of experience managing a team and leading people, including holding team members accountable for outcomes and deliverables, is required.

Experience in public project design and/or delivery is preferred.

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

State Driver License that meets current GPHC carrier guidelines.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading projects through all phases conception through to close out services, including, fit-out planning, equipment planning, and casework planning.
  • Complete and thorough project documentation through all phases.
  • Working with the project team, clients, consultants, and other responsible parties to ensure the project is within budget.
  • Taking meetings with municipal building departments and other governing agencies to coordinate project approval or variances as needed.
  • Leading meetings, with internal or external partners, pertaining to all aspects of project execution.
  • Consistently reviewing work in progress, and communicating needs, concerns, and feedback to the project team.
  • Supervising the preparation of technical drawings by less senior level architects or technicians.
  • Ensuring the construction details and documentation conform to quality assurance, quality control, and best practice standards.
  • Leading construction administration efforts.
  • Cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships with new and existing clients.
  • Attending conferences and seminars as requested.
  • Contributing to marketing and business development efforts.

Your experience includes:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of project development and documentation.
  • You are a registered, licensed architect.
  • A Master of Architecture degree.
  • A minimum of 15 years’ industry experience.
  • You are fully proficient in Revit.
  • You are familiar with AutoCAD.
  • The capability to meet industry guidelines, local, state, and federal codes in the execution of your work.
