When was the last time you reviewed your AIA membership profile? If you are like many members, you probably updated your information when you first joined or renewed your membership, but you may not have given it much thought since then. While it may seem like a relatively minor administrative task, maintaining an accurate and complete profile is an important part of getting the most from your AIA membership.
Your membership profile is more than a collection of contact information. It helps connect you with the resources, opportunities, and professional community that make AIA membership valuable. It also helps AIA at the national, state, and local levels understand who its members are, what they need, and how the organization can better serve them.
Taking just a few minutes to review your profile can make a meaningful difference in your membership experience.
Better Communication Starts with Accurate Information
AIA communicates with members throughout the year about professional development, continuing education, legislative advocacy, leadership opportunities, conferences, and other programs. Your contact information helps ensure that these communications reach you.
An outdated email address, an incorrect mailing address, or a change in employment that has not been recorded can result in missed information and opportunities. This is particularly important for members who have changed firms, retired, become licensed, or moved to another location.
Accurate information also helps strengthen communication among AIA’s national organization, AIA Ohio, and our seven local chapters. Each level of the organization provides different resources and opportunities, and current member information helps all three communicate more effectively.
A Membership Experience That Reflects Your Interests
Not every AIA member has the same professional interests or needs. An emerging professional preparing for licensure may be looking for resources that differ significantly from those of a firm principal, an architect working in the public sector, or a recently retired member.
Your profile provides an opportunity to identify your professional interests, background, and areas of expertise. Keeping that information current helps AIA better understand the interests of its members and develop relevant educational programs, professional resources, and opportunities for engagement.
Your communication preferences are equally important. Reviewing them allows you to manage certain communications and subscriptions so that the information you receive better reflects your interests. Some members prefer to receive information via their personal email while others prefer to have it delivered to their work address. These can be defined in the member profile.
The more accurately your profile reflects where you are in your career and what matters to you professionally, the better positioned AIA is to address your needs.
Helping AIA Make Better Decisions
There is another benefit to maintaining your profile that extends beyond your individual membership. The information members provide helps AIA better understand the composition of the profession and how it is changing.
AIA uses member information, including voluntarily reported demographic data, to identify trends, conduct research, and inform the development of programs and services. This information can also help the organization better understand the professional experiences and needs of its membership.
For AIA Ohio and our local chapters, accurate member records support membership outreach, planning, and communication. Having a clearer understanding of our members helps us identify opportunities to strengthen programs, encourage participation, and direct resources where they can be most useful.
In short, keeping your profile current benefits not only you but also the larger AIA community.
How to Review and Update Your Profile
Updating your information is relatively straightforward and can be completed through the AIA website.
- Visit www.aia.org and sign in using your AIA account credentials. You can also go directly to myaccount.aia.org.
- Open My Account. Locate the red Manage section and select Edit to access your profile information.
- Review your information. Check your name, preferred email address, mailing address, telephone number, employer, professional information, and other available profile fields. Make any necessary corrections and save your changes.
- Review your interests and communication preferences. Update the information that reflects your current professional interests and manage the communication options available to you.
If your membership category needs to change, such as moving from Associate to Architect membership, or you need to transfer to another chapter, AIA provides separate processes for those changes.
Make It an Annual Habit
Consider making a review of your AIA profile part of your annual membership renewal process. Over the next few weeks, invoices for membership renewal will be sent to all active members. Take advantage of this subtle reminder to look through your profile information. It is also a good idea to update your information whenever you change firms, receive your architectural license, move, or experience another significant professional change.
AIA membership represents an investment in your career, your professional relationships, and the future of architecture. Keeping your profile current is one of the simplest ways to help protect that investment.
Take five minutes today to visit myaccount.aia.org, review your information, and make any necessary updates. It is a small task that can improve your membership experience while helping AIA Ohio and the Institute serve all of us more effectively.
